Fire rated single hinged door with fixed side screen.
This project arose from the need to introduce a compliant fire-rated separation between the hallway and the main living space, following guidance from building control. As is often the case in open-plan renovations, the challenge lay in meeting fire regulations without compromising the openness, light and cohesion of the interior.
A key constraint in this scheme was the size of the aperture. While a double door set was initially considered, the available width did not allow for a practical or well-proportioned solution. A full-width single door would have resulted in an overly wide and visually dominant element, disproportionate to the surrounding space. Instead, a more considered approach was adopted, a single fire-rated door, paired with a fixed screen.
This configuration provided the ideal balance. The door, set at a width of 738mm, offers comfortable and practical access, while the fixed screen extends the overall opening, maintaining a sense of openness and continuity between spaces. The result is a layout that feels intentional and well resolved, rather than forced by constraints.
The design itself follows a clean and contemporary direction, allowing the proportions of the glazing and framework to take centre stage. The inclusion of the fixed screen ensures that natural light continues to flow freely between the hallway and kitchen, preserving the brightness and visual connection that defines the space.
Finish played an equally important role in integrating the installation into the wider scheme. Rather than opting for a black, the door was finished in RAL 7016, a softer, more nuanced tone. This choice allowed the door to sit comfortably within the interior, complementing nearby elements including the vertical radiator, electrical fittings such as switches and sockets and the kitchen hardware. The consistency of these darker accents creates a cohesive and well-considered palette throughout the home.
The final result is a solution that satisfies the required fire regulations while enhancing the overall aesthetic of the space. The combination of a well-proportioned single door and fixed screen delivers both practicality and visual balance, demonstrating how thoughtful design can turn a technical requirement into a defining architectural feature.

Our Reviews
“Fantastic looking doors.”
“Found Joshua James online and was impressed with the products they had to offer. After designing and quoting I decided to proceed and the results of the two sets of doors that I ordered are fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the look and finish of them.”
